The flight data recorder of a Merpati Nusantara Airlines plane that crashed Saturday has been found, an official said Sunday.
“The black box was found at 4p.m. local time [2 p.m. Jakarta],” Kaimana Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Antonius Wantri Julianto was quoted as saying by news portal tempointeraktif.com.
Julianto said police divers found the black box in a good condition.
As of 5p.m. Sunday, 21 bodies have been reportedly recovered.
There has been public speculation the Chinese-made Xian MA60 turboprop was of substandard build quality, prompting calls for an investigation.
The aircraft crashed into the sea Saturday just short of Kaimana airport in West Papua.
